SCHMALLENGBERG VIRUS (SBV) VACCINATION

Posted on

Livestock owners of breeding cattle, sheep and goats are being urged to seek veterinary advice to ensure they make informed decisions about the use the recently authorised SBV vaccine.

The vaccine is based on a killed virus, and the body produces antibodies to fight it which, in turn, protects against natural infection of the live virus.

However, as this is a new vaccine it is not yet known how long immunity will last. The datasheet confirms the vaccine cannot be used in pregnant animals. Cattle from two months of age will require an injection of two 2ml doses administered approximately four weeks apart. This means that it is too late to vaccinate cows now mated for spring calving in 2014.

The recommended dose for sheep, from four months of age, is one 2ml dose and the animal will develop immunity three weeks after vaccination.

The vaccine is available in vials of 20 or 100 ml. As the duration of immunity is not yet established, any revaccination scheme should also be agreed in consultation with farm vets.

Merial Animal Health have also developed a vaccine however this is still with the Veterinary Medicines Directorate pending approval. It is anticipated that it will be available for use for autumn pre-tupping.

At present, the price of the vaccine can vary widely between veterinary practices so, with the introduction of a second vaccine, competition will hopefully push prices down for farmers.
