AN END TO STAMP DUTY LAND TAX

Posted on

Stamp Duty Land Tax will cease to apply in Scotland in 2015. Sounds too good to be true? Well, that’s because it is.

As previously reported, the Scottish Government consulted on their proposed Land and Buildings Transaction Tax until September 2012 and a Bill was introduced to parliament at the end of November. The evidence session of the finance committee then took place on 6th February 2013 with the Stage 1 Debate on the Land and Buildings Transaction Tax (Scotland) Bill taking place on 25th April 2013.

At this debate, Parliament agreed to the general principles of the Bill and, accordingly, Stage 1 of the parliamentary process is now complete.

It is the Scottish Government's intention to bring forward amendments to the Bill at Stage 2 but, in the meantime, a Working Group is being set up to consider how non-residential leases should be dealt with under a new tax system.

If you would like more information on how this change could affect you, Bowlts would recommend seeking professional advice from a Chartered Accountant, who will be able to offer advice on financial planning.
