HSE ISSUE ANNUAL REMINDER REGARDING SAFETY AT HARVEST TIME

Posted on

Every year the HSE issue a press release regarding safety in the run up to harvest. This year, they have also released updated practical guidance on child safety around farms, covering under-13s and older children.

Before you move on to the next news article on this page, it’s worth remembering that the agricultural industry is still the most dangerous sector to work in. Within the UK, just over 1% of workers work in the agricultural industry - yet agriculture accounts for 20% of fatal accidents to workers.

Children on farms are especially at risk and over the last decade, children on farms who have died were either being carried as passengers on agricultural plant and machinery, playing unsupervised, working/helping around the farm or trespassing.

A couple of real life examples, lifted from the HSE booklet, make for sobering reading…

“A 3-year-old boy was playing in the farmyard. A metal gate was propped against a workshop wall waiting for hinges to be fitted. The boy climbed up the rungs of the gate and it fell and crushed him.”

“A 14-year-old boy was driving a tractor and had a 16-year-old friend with him. The friend got out and his leg was run over by a powered cultivator. His leg had to be amputated.”

The booklet can be downloaded from the HSE website. (http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg472.pdf)
