The Crofting Census

Posted on

The Crofting Commission is carrying out a data gathering exercise across the crofting community.

Following the implementation of the Crofting Reform (Scotland) Act 2010, the Crofting Commission has a duty to issue the Crofting Census and Common Grazings Census, which are known legislatively as the Annual Notice and the Duty to Report.  The Crofting Census is a legal requirement and all crofters must complete and return it by 16 January 2015.

The Crofting Commission is asking for information on what crofters do with their croft and any common grazing share. This will help to establish a clear picture of the current state of crofting and enable the Commission to use the information to advise Scottish Ministers, the Scottish Parliament and other agencies of the value of crofting and its contribution to life in Scotland.  With the information provided, the Commission will be able to better understand and raise issues facing the future of crofting.

The Census allows crofters to contribute to improving support for crofters, shaping the future of their crofting community and strengthening the crofting system.

The Commission is required to give notice to crofters to make an annual declaration on the state of their croft through the Crofting Census.  This is a legislative duty which all crofters must complete.

Crofters can contribute to the future of their crofts and communities by:

  • Completing the Crofting Census form and providing the Commission with valuable information
  • Understanding their responsibilities as a crofter
  • Making sure they fulfil the duties of a crofter
  • Taking steps to put things right if they are not fulfilling their duties.

The Commission wants to encourage crofters to understand their responsibilities and to self-regulate.  Self-regulation means crofters stay in control over what happens with their croft and provides options so they can contribute to the future of the croft, township and to the whole system of crofting.
