Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

Posted on

You can now claim Renewable Heat Incentive payments (RHI) for a number of renewable heat systems including biomass, ground source heat pumps and air source heat pumps for domestic properties. All that is needed is an EPC and Green Deal Assessment before being able to apply. Unlike non-domestic the payments are made on the estimated requirements for the house, rather than a metered basis, however if the EPC recommends certain improvements (cavity wall insulation and loft insulation) that must be undertaken first – to try and reduce the estimated requirements. Payments are made for 7 years (non-domestic is 20 years), quarterly and the current rate for biomass is 12.2p per kwh, which is RPI linked and reviewed 1st April each year.

We have calculated that for large rented farmhouses the payback period is around 4-5 years, from RHI alone. For owner occupiers, pellets are a much cheaper fuel than oil so further savings can be made that way, and the payback period reduced.
